Transitioning

Migrate existing presets and learn about key layout and design changes.

Upgrading Existing Presets

Your existing presets will continue to work in the HALO 5.0 update. When you open an older preset for the first time after updating, you’ll be prompted to migrate your previous photo design to the new layout system.

Select a frame size from the available options. The selected size will apply to all frames in your layout. Then, tap the checkmark button to continue to the Layout Designer

If you attempt to launch a preset that hasn’t been transitioned to the layout system, you’ll be prompted to update it first.

Migrated Presets

After migration, your preset will include new layouts that are compatible with HALO 5.0 and later. You can still use the preset on older versions of HALO, but older versions won't apply the new 5.0 customization options.

If you downgrade to an earlier version of the app (or edit the preset in the old dashboard settings), any layout changes made there will not carry over when you return to 5.0.

Important changes

There are a few key updates to be aware of in the new Layout Designer:

  • Orientation: You can now set the orientation of your photos in advance. The app will capture photos or videos according to your layout settings, regardless of the iPad’s physical orientation.

  • Choose Layout Tool: This tool has been removed and replaced with the option to select multiple layouts when starting a photo session.

  • Themes: The theme experience has been redesigned. Previously, themes acted as complete templates for the entire experience, automatically applying a themed start screen and matching photo overlay. Now, they’re more flexible and you can:

    • Choose themes separately for your start screens and layouts

    • Import individual theme elements as layers within your layout

  • Photo Effects: Frame effects including filters, glam, and background blur, have been moved to the experience designer.

Legacy Edit Tools

  • Crop Mode: You can now control frame size directly within your custom layout.

  • GIF Speed: GIF speed can still be set in your custom layout.

  • Change Layout Tool: Replaced with the option for participants to choose from multiple layouts when starting a session.

  • Background Color Tool: Background colors are now defined in your custom layout, and participants can select from available options at the start of a session.

  • Shuffle Tool: Frames will be fixed in the positions you select in the Layout Designer.

Printing

  • Updated print layout designer: similar to the digital layout designer, the print design process has been simplified. Some features are incomplete, but we still value your feedback about the existing changes. More information coming soon.

  • Force Fit: This setting has been removed. Print layouts now handle sizing during the design process, allowing you to work within specific frame dimensions.
