# Background Replacement

Swap the environment behind your participants with custom digital images. When enabled as a participant editing tool, background replacement allows guests to switch their background after capture if they change their mind.

***

#### How it Works

1. **Enable Pre-Capture**: Background replacement must first be enabled as a [pre-capture effect](/customization-guide/experience-designer/pre-capture/background-replacement.md) before it can be used as an edit tool. Multiple backgrounds must be saved to your preset.
2. **Initial Selection**: If you have multiple backgrounds available, guests are prompted to select their favorite before the countdown begins.
3. **Capture**: The photo is taken and the initial background choice is applied.
4. **Post-Capture Swap**: If a guest changes their mind after seeing the result, they can use the edit tool to swap in a different background instantly — no need to retake the photo.

***

#### Configuration Settings

* **Toggle Enable:** Use the switch to turn the background replacement tool on or off.
* **Available Backgrounds**: All backgrounds saved to your [pre-capture settings](/customization-guide/experience-designer/pre-capture/background-replacement.md) will be available for participants to select.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.simplebooth.com/customization-guide/experience-designer/post-capture/edit-tools/background-replacement.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
